VAT Guide: Major Obligations for Car Dealers & Service Centres
What Is VAT for Automotive Businesses in UAE?
All car dealers and service centres in the UAE must follow the VAT rules set by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA). Every business that sells new cars, used cars, spare parts, or services must pay attention to VAT registration, issue proper tax invoices, claim input tax, and file VAT returns. FTA has published a special bulletin to explain these rules and help car dealers understand their VAT obligations.
When Must Car Dealers Register for VAT?
Car dealers in the UAE must register for VAT when their total taxable sales and imports go over AED 375,000 in the last 12 months or will cross this amount in the next 30 days. Businesses can also register for VAT voluntarily if sales and imports are more than AED 187,500. Even zero-rated supplies count towards this limit. All car dealers and service centres must check their sales every month to see if they need to register.
Which Supplies Are Subject to VAT in Automotive Sector?
Car dealers and service centres must collect VAT on these supplies:
- Sales of new cars
- Sales of used cars
- Servicing and repair work
- Sales of spare parts and accessories
Every sale, service, or supply related to cars is usually subject to the standard VAT rate.
How Do Car Dealers Issue Tax Invoices?
Car dealers and service centres must issue a tax invoice for every sale that is subject to VAT. This invoice must show that VAT was charged at the standard rate. If the customer isn’t VAT registered or the sale is under AED 10,000, they can give a simplified invoice. If they use the profit margin scheme (more below), the invoice must state this clearly and include all other info required by VAT law.
What Is the Profit Margin Scheme for Used Cars?
Car dealers can use the profit margin scheme when selling used cars. This scheme allows VAT to be charged only on the profit made (the difference between buying and selling price) and not on the full price. Dealers can use the profit margin scheme for:
- Second-hand cars and movable goods
- Antiques (over 50 years old)
- Collectibles like coins and stamps
Can Automotive Businesses Recover Input Tax?
Yes! Car dealers and service centres can claim back the VAT they paid on business purchases and expenses. However, there are exceptions. For example, they cannot recover VAT on:
- Entertainment for employees or clients
- Buying, leasing, or renting vehicles for personal use
Always keep records to show what VAT you’ve paid and what you can claim.
How Does VAT Work on Gifts and Giveaways?
If a car dealer gives away gifts or freebies to staff or clients, VAT may be due. But, there are exceptions:
- If input VAT was not claimed on the gift
- If the value given to each person is less than AED 500 in 12 months
- If the VAT on all such gifts is less than AED 2,000 in 12 months
What About VAT on Repairs & Spare Parts Under Warranty?
If a car dealer repairs a vehicle under warranty or gives spare parts, VAT may apply if the customer pays for an extra warranty or services. If repairs and parts are free under the warranty, and the manufacturer pays the dealer, VAT is still charged at the standard rate if the work is done in the UAE.
Special VAT Rules for Service Centres
If a service centre claims costs from a manufacturer outside the UAE, but provides repairs or parts in the UAE, VAT must be charged at the standard rate. Always check the rules if you handle warranty work for foreign brands.
