Tax Refunds for International Events & Seminars in UAE

On 16 June 2019, the UAE Cabinet approved a decision allowing VAT refunds for all international events, conferences, and seminars held in the UAE. This decision means event organizers can claim a refund of VAT paid on services related to arranging these events.

The purpose of this step is to improve the ease of doing business, increase global competitiveness, and promote the UAE as a leading destination for international events.

Why This Decision Matters

This initiative shows the UAE government’s commitment to building a competitive events sector. It also supports the national tax system and aligns it with global standards. By making it easier and cheaper to host events, the UAE strengthens its position as a global hub for business and knowledge exchange.

Economic Impact of Events Sector

According to industry statistics, the events and seminars sector contributes over AED 2 billion annually to the UAE economy and is expected to exceed AED 5 billion. The government aims to attract more international business tourism, creating new opportunities for hotels, venues, and service providers.

Eligibility for VAT Refund

This decision applies to:

  • Events, seminars, and conferences licensed by a competent local authority.
  • Formal meetings between licensed parties of mutual interest.
  • Events conducted for a maximum of 7 days.

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) announced that from 1 June 2019, it has obtained FTA approval to waive VAT for all international participants at its venues across the country.
